Frequently Asked Questions

Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a stool test that uses antibodies to detect blood in the stool. The presence of blood may be a sign of lower gastrointestinal bleeding that may be associated with conditions such as hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, polyps, colorectal cancer, or other gastrointestinal lesions that can bleed. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends screening for colorectal cancer beginning at age 45.

A negative result indicates that blood was not detected in your sample. A positive result indicates that blood was detected in your sample, which may be a sign of lower gastrointestinal bleeding that may be associated with conditions such as hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, polyps, colorectal cancer, or other gastrointestinal lesions that can bleed.

No test is 100% accurate, and a FIT can miss pre-cancerous polyps or cancer. We recommend FIT as part of your regular screening for colorectal cancer and pre-cancerous polyps.

An abnormal FIT result means you have blood in your stool. It doesn't necessarily mean you have cancer or pre-cancerous polyps, but it does mean you should follow up with your doctor to determine why you have blood in your stool, which may include a colonoscopy.
